~ For the past eight years between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Joe Maddon shops, cooks and serves a traditional spaghetti meal to hundreds of needy citizens throughout Tampa Bay. The sauce is a well-guarded family recipe. Several Rays employees and coaches help out.

~ Joe created a website,, to allow others to contribute the program.

~ Last year, Thanksmas was able to provide not only a hearty meal and gift to each person, but also raised $20,000 to be distributed to Salvation Army Center’s in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Bradenton, the Homeless Emergency Project and the Sallie House, a safe haven for abused and neglected children in St. Petersburg.

~ In 2011, Joe extended his Thanksmas to his hometown, Hazelton, PA and launched HIP, Hazelton Integration Project to help unite the people of many different cultures in the town.

~ Joe also strongly supports several Boys and Girls Clubs.


Joe Maddon was named American League Manager-of-the-Year in 2008 and 2011. In 2012, he was voted the smartest manager in baseball in a poll by Men’s Journal. In 2011, a Sports Illustrated poll of 291 major leaguers voted Joe the manager they would most like to play for.
