HUMANITARIAN SERVICE:

~ Last season, Jason Castro and his wife Maris, both graduates of Stanford University, kicked off their multifaceted initiative, “Castro’s Kids,” providing incentives to encourage students to embrace literacy.

~ They organized a two-day “Castro’s Kids Book Drive” to benefit the Houston Independent School District this June.

~ Partnering with Better World Books, Jason arranged for 5,600 books to be given to three schools in the district to support their summer reading platform. Twenty-five students from the school with the highest increase in reading will win an all-expense paid trip to an Astros game.

~ The Castros took part in the annual “Name That Book Red Carpet Event” in 2013 to mark the start of a district-wide competition. They also donated funds that will be matched by the MLB Players Association.

~ He led a baseball clinic for kids at the Astros Urban Youth Academy.

BASEBALL CAREER:

In 2013, Jason Castro was named to the American League All-Star team. He had one of the best seasons ever by an Astros catcher, earning team MVP honors and AL Player-of-the-Week twice.
