COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Both of Curtis Granderson's parents are teachers. He writes several blogs to communicate directly with his fans. Curtis goes out of his way to help families who have lost loved ones, including the family of Virginia Tech student Brian Bluhm and the family of Timmy Vachon, a child who died in a skiing accident last winter. Last November, he served as a Major league Baseball Ambassador to Europe. For the Detroit Public Schools, Curtis founded and sponsored a district-wide art and essay contest titled "Striving for Excellence: Baseball in America," to help kids expand their minds creatively and artistically. To reward the efforts of the students, he hosted 70 winners during a Tigers game in June. He has visited eight Detroit public schools and two suburban schools this season, speaking about the importance of teamwork and education. He serves as the spokesperson for the Detroit Tigers "Gloves for Kids" program. He is also the spokesperson for the Detroit News "Newspapers for Education" program. Curtis is an ambassador for the "Buses for Baseball" program that brings inner city children to a baseball game for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Through fundraising efforts, he has raised almost $7,000 to benefit COTS.

BASEBALL CAREER:
Curtis Granderson was the Tigers' Rookie-of-the-Year in 2005 and the Tigers' Minor League Player-of-the-Year in 2004. He was selected to the Eastern League All-Star squad and Baseball America's Double A All-Star team in 2004.
The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver.
Proceeds from the event benefit Denver Kids, Inc., a preventative counseling
and mentoring program for at-risk students in Denver Public Schools.
