Both of Curtis Granderson's parents are teachers. He writes several blogs to
communicate directly with his fans. Curtis goes out of his way to help families
who have lost loved ones, including the family of Virginia Tech student Brian
Bluhm and the family of Timmy Vachon, a child who died in a skiing accident
last winter. Last November, he served as a Major league Baseball Ambassador
to Europe. For the Detroit Public Schools, Curtis founded and sponsored a
district-wide art and essay contest titled "Striving for Excellence: Baseball in
America," to help kids expand their minds creatively and artistically. To reward
the efforts of the students, he hosted 70 winners during a Tigers game in June.
He has visited eight Detroit public schools and two suburban schools this
season, speaking about the importance of teamwork and education. He serves
as the spokesperson for the Detroit Tigers "Gloves for Kids" program. He is also
the spokesperson for the Detroit News "Newspapers for Education" program.
Curtis is an ambassador for the "Buses for Baseball" program that brings inner
city children to a baseball game for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Through
fundraising efforts, he has raised almost $7,000 to benefit COTS.
Curtis Granderson was the Tigers' Rookie-of-the-Year in 2005 and the Tigers'
Minor League Player-of-the-Year in 2004. He was selected to the Eastern
League All-Star squad and Baseball America's Double A All-Star team in 2004.
