BOSTON RED SOX
DAVID ORTIZ

AGE: 31
POSITION: Designated Hitter
BIRTHPLACE: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
RESIDES: Dominican Republic
SCHOOL: Estudia Espillat (DR) High School
PERSONAL: Wife Tiffany, one son, two daughters
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
When David Ortiz broke the Red Sox record for home runs in a single season last September, a record set by Jimmie Foxx in 1938, he auctioned off home run balls number 50 and 52. The money raised, together with donations from teammates and the Red Sox Foundation, resulted in a $200,000 donation to the Hospital General de la Plaza Salud in Santo Domingo. The contribution will be used to perform heart surgery on children. Before two games last September, David posed for pictures with fans in exchange for a $100 donation to support a patient undergoing care at Children's Hospital Boston. The photo session raised more than $20,000, which was matched by the Red Sox Foundation. He is an active member of the MLB Players Trust program, Boston "Action Team," a national youth volunteer initiative in partnership with Volunteers of America that recruits the next generation of volunteers. Last season, David hosted the "Big Papi's Power Hitting Clinic for Kids" and "Big Papi's Celebrity Mixer" which benefited Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston and the hospital in Santo Domingo. In 2004, he raised funds to help victims of a massive flood in the Dominican Republic. He was a Red Sox nominee for the 2006 Roberto Clemente Award.

BASEBALL CAREER:
David Ortiz led the American League and ranked second in the Majors with a club record 54 home runs and 137 RBIs last season. He also topped the AL with 355 total bases and 119 walks.
The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver.
Proceeds from the event benefit Denver Kids, Inc., a preventative counseling
