Since the 2002 season, Michael and his wife Cristina have been actively involved with "Wipe Out Kids' Cancer" (WOKC). WOKC partners with the Children's Medical Center of Dallas and selects children to represent WOKC at different fundraising events. The primary purpose of the program is to give kids a chance to just be kids and forget about their cancer treatments. Meeting Michael and attending a Rangers game is one of the highlights of the year. In 2005, Michael helped furnish an outpatient physical therapy room at Children's Medical Center, providing much needed equipment. Last year he founded the "Young Heroes Scholarship" program, awarding four cancer survivors $2,500 college scholarships and a laptop computer. In addition, he awarded six other survivors $1,000 scholarships. This year, he is expanding his scholarship awards. Michael also participates in MLB Players Association "Buses for Baseball" and "Action Team" programs. He won the 2003 Harold McKinney Good Guy Award from the Baseball Writers Association.
