2007 Nominee

PITTSBURGH PIRATES
SALOMON TORRES

AGE: 35
POSITION: Pitcher
BIRTHPLACE: Dominican Republic
RESIDES: Pittsburgh, PA
SCHOOL: Centro Academico (DR) High School
PERSONAL: Wife Belkis, two daughters
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Salomon Torres is always the first to volunteer to participate in Piratesponsored community activities and events. But his philanthropy extends far beyond the Pittsburgh area. He has funded the construction of two baseball training facilities in the Dominican Republic. These centers are not only a place for children and the community, but also where professional teams practice. Every off-season, Salomon goes back to DR to participate and teach in camps for children. He collects equipment, clothes, uniforms, etc. from his teammates throughout the season to take down with him to give to the kids. Working with Dick's Sporting Goods this past year, he convinced them to make a significant donation of coaches kits for the center. He even made a video of his last visit to show to his teammates so they would understand where their donations went and how much they meant to the kids. Salomon is developing a charitable fantasy camp that he plans to have at one of the centers during the off-season. He is also in the process of securing an ambulance for his hometown's hospital. He recently moved his entire family to Pittsburgh so his daughters could start school here and be with him. His brought his daughter's entire first grade class, along with parents and siblings, to a Pirates game.

BASEBALL CAREER:
In his fifth season with the Pirates, Salomon Torres led all Major league pitchers in appearances. He also led NL relievers in innings pitched.
The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver.
