Upon signing a new contract for the 2002 season, C.C. Sabathia pledged to
give $250,000 over the life of the contract to Cleveland Indians Charities,
specifically designated for the RBI program (Reviving Baseball in the Inner
City). In 2005, he teamed up with Barry Zito and Curt Schilling in an effort
called "Strikeouts for Troops," a national program that provides some of the
comforts of home and assists with family travel and housing expenses for
service members who are being treated at military hospitals. C.C. personally
contributed $100 for every strikeout in 2005 and 2006, totaling $333,000. He
also serves as the honorary spokesperson for "Gang Resistant Education and
Training" (G.R.E.A.T.), a program focused on providing life skills to students to
help them avoid using delinquent behavior and violence to solve problems. The
G.R.E.A.T program offers a continuum of components for students and their
families. C.C. has also recorded numerous public service announcements for
several of the Indians' community partners. He donated $3,000 to the
Cleveland Food Bank for Thanksgiving meals in 2005. In 2003, he organized
the "Sabathia Baseball Clinic" in his hometown of Valljo, California.
In May last season, C.C. Sabathia posted a 5-1 record with a 1.20 ERA in six
starts, earning him Pitcher of the Month honors. He finished the season 12-11
with a 3.22 ERA, his best performance in six seasons in the Majors.
