After agreeing to a seven-year contract extension to stay with the Blue Jays,
Vernon donated $1,000,000 to the Jay Care Foundation, an organization that
enhances the quality of life for children and youth across the Greater Toronto
area. His donation further entrenches him as a community ambassador for the
Blue Jays. Vernon recently accepted the role of Honorary Commissioner of the
Rookie League, a partnership between the Foundation and Toronto Community
Housing. The league is an eight-week day camp program for kids who live in
Community Housing. Each summer, these kids learn about healthy lifestyle,
drug awareness and baseball. Through Vernon's hard work and dedication, the
league has expanded to more than 20 teams and 500 participants. He has
made numerous visits to league games and hosted an end-of-season All-Star
game and party on the field at Rogers Centre for all Rookie League participants.
Vernon has proven that he is committed to providing children with an
experience they will never forget and teaching them life lessons that they will
grow to appreciate. Throughout last season, Vernon has stepped up to the
plate to help local non-profit agencies, schools and youth groups by making
fans' dreams come true with personal visits and personal contributions.
Vernon Wells has been named to the American League All-Star team twice.
He has won three Gold Gloves, posting a .988 fielding percentage in 2006.
Last season, he hit .303 with 32 home runs and a team-high 106 RBIs.
