COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Since 2003, Lance Berkman has donated $300,000 to the Astros In Action Foundation to support many Houston-area charities, including the Yellowstone Academy, a non-profit organization whose goal is to reach children in circumstances that create a high probability of life dysfunction, and to provide them with the environment and tools necessary to lead to success in life. Lance has teamed up with The Methodist Hospital for "Berkman's Bunch," allowing hundreds of Houston children and their families to come to the ballpark. "Berkman's Bunch" meets during every Saturday home game in the summer. Lance provides game tickets, promotional items and a personal visit prior to the game. He makes frequent personal visits to area hospitals to speak with patients and employees. Lance is always eager to participate in the Astros community outreach programs including visits to schools and organizations on the Astros Caravan, as well as Astros FanFest. Lance was named the Houston Astros 2001 and 2002 Roberto Clemente Man-of-the-Year in recognition of his outstanding community service endeavors.


BASEBALL CAREER:
Lance Berkman was an MVP candidate last season, hitting .315 with a career high 45 home runs and 136 RBIs. He set the franchise record for RBIs, while his home run total ranked second in Astros history. He was one of 24 minor league players selected to represent the U.S. at the 1999 Pan Am Games.
The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver.
Proceeds from the event benefit Denver Kids, Inc., a preventative counseling
and mentoring program for at-risk students in Denver Public Schools.
