Former
Chicago White Sox southpaw Billy Pierce retired from baseball
more than 40 years ago, but he’s still a Chicago
All-Star, serving as president of Chicago Baseball Cancer
Charities for nearly 20 years. Recipients of the organization’s
funds include Northwestern Memorial and Children’s
Memorial Hospitals and Camp One Step at a Time, which
caters to children with chronic illnesses. CBCC has raised
$11,000,000 to date. Billy has been planning to retire
from his post atop CBCC for nearly 10 years. “I
keep doing it because of the cause,” Billy says.
“Everyone has been touched by cancer in a friend
or family member, but not everyone is able to do something
about it. We’ve been able to enlist the help of
business leaders and celebrities who are willing to lend
their name to our cause, and every person who supports
us knows that all of the money they give goes right back
into the search for a cure for cancer.” Billy also
remains a treasured member of the White Sox Speaker’s
Bureau, making dozens of appearances each year to support
the team’s community outreach efforts.
A
7-time All-Star and member of the White Sox All-Century
Team, Billy Pierce finished his career with a record of
211-169, and an ERA of 3.27. He threw 193 complete games,
38 shutouts and 1,999 strikeouts. Billy led the American
League in strikeouts in 1953 (186), ERA in 1955 (1.97)
and victories in 1957 (20). He played in three World Series,
winning the championship in 1945 with Detroit. His White
Sox uniform No. 19 was retired in 1987.
