As
a result of his concern for the homeless and the hungry,
Mike Maroth and his wife Brooke started a program that
provides leftovers from the Tigers clubhouse to local
soup kitchens. For his efforts, Rock and Wrap It Up honored
him with the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Award in 2004.
Mike spent a portion of September 11, 2004 exchanging
autographs for donated books at the “Unity in the
Community” book drive in largely Hispanic Southwest
Detroit. The Detroit City Council showed its appreciation
by presenting Mike with the prestigious Spirit of Detroit
Award. Mike has worked tirelessly with Disabled American
Veterans since he was in the minor leagues, visiting patients
in VA hospitals throughout the country. He is also a frequent
visitor to children’s hospitals and area schools.
A devout Christian, Mike offers his powerful testimony
before numerous groups, including the Home Plate event
sponsored by Baseball Chapel each season at Comerica Park,
where he addresses more than 5,000 participants. Last
year, Mike helped raise $27,000 for the Cystinosis Research
Network when he received the Dick Bernardino Alumni Award
for productivity, work ethic and coachability. Mike was
recently honored with the Maxwell J. Scheifer Distinguished
Service Award from Exceptional Parent magazine.
Mike
Maroth won a career-best 11 games for the Tigers last
year in his second full season at the Major League level.
He tied for sixth in the American League with 217 innings
pitched and eighth with 33 games started.
