Since
his rookie season with the Pirates in 2001, Craig Wilson
has been an active member of the Pittsburgh community.
Beginning his first year, he served as the honorary chairman
of the annual Epilepsy Foundation of Western/Central Pennsylvania
Family Fun Run/Walk. He has continued to serve as honorary
chairman every year since. The 2004 event raised more
than $80,000 for the Foundation. This season, as host
of the Gilmore Infant and Women’s Center charity
auction, he helped to raise more than $19,000. The Center
at Allegheny General Hospital is dedicated to serving
high-risk obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine. The
Center combines the latest technology with personalized
care to insure the confidence of both the expectant mother
and her physician. Craig and his wife Jill are both involved
in the Pirates “Bat to Beat Breast Cancer”
women’s baseball clinic held at PNC Park. With their
help, last year’s first time event raised $10,000
for the Allegheny General Hospital Breast Care Center.
Craig assists the Pirates with countless autograph sessions,
special on-field chats with area children, visits local
elementary schools, makes ward visits to Children’s
Hospital and participates in the the ballclub’s
annual winter Caravan and PirateFest programs.
In
2004, Craig Wilson established career highs in nearly
every offensive category, leading the team in home runs
and runs scored and shared the team lead in RBIs. He was
hit by a pitch a Major League-leading 30 times.
