Losing
a kidney as an infant set the stage for Trevor Hoffman’s
community service endeavors as an adult. He donates $200
for each save to the National Kidney Foundation of Southern
California. He serves as the celebrity spokesman for the
Foundation’s San Diego region. He invites “Kidney
Kids” to Padres games and meets with them prior
to each Saturday home game. To honor both his father’s
and father-in-law’s military service, Trevor and
his wife Tracy purchase tickets for Marine families, many
of whom have a deployed parent. In 2002, he was one of
the national spokespersons for Major League Baseball’s
support of “The Big Bam’s” breast cancer
awareness program. On Mother’s Day, a pitcher from
each team placed a pink chair out in the bullpen to represent
the women who have lost their lives to breast cancer.
Trevor is also part of Garth Brooks’ “Touch’em
All” Foundation, which raises money from players,
entertainers and corporate sponsors for children’s
charities across the country. He serves as spokesman for
the Junior Padres Club and participates in the Junior
Padres Clinic. In 1999, he received the Chairman’s
Award, presented annually to the Padre who best exemplifies
the community spirit of the Moores family. Trevor was
also chosen as the 1997 Combined Health Agencies’
Celebrity Health Hero.
Returning
to form after an injury shortened 2003, Trevor Hoffman
saved 41 games, tying him for sixth among league leaders.
In his 12th big league campaign, Trevor is now third on
the all-time MLB save list.
