One
of B.J. Surhoff’s sons, Mason, is autistic. Due
to this family connection, B.J. willingly donates time
and money to awareness campaigns regarding autism. He
is a co-founder and member of the board of directors of
Pathfinders for Autism, a foundation and resource center
dedicated to locating and providing services for families
with autistic children. He actively participates in this
non-profit’s efforts, providing not only fund raising
support, but also input to the group’s resource
center. Pathfinders offers information on medical, therapeutic,
recreational, educational and other resources for parents
of autistic children. In addition to his work with Pathfinders,
B.J. purchases tickets for special education teachers
in Maryland to attend Orioles games. With his wife Polly,
he assisted the Oriole Wives’ annual food drive,
distributing turkeys to a local soup kitchen for the Maryland
Food Bank at Thanksgiving. B.J. actively participates
in the Orioles’ annual winter FanFest. He also makes
regular appearances at fund raising banquets throughout
the Orioles region.
Now
in his 19th Major League season, B.J. Surhoff has a .282
batting average in a career that has spanned 2,233 games
and almost 8,000 at-bats. At UNC, he had a career batting
average of .392, setting school records for runs scored
(77), batting average (.400 in 1984), hits (98) and steals
(33). He was a 3-time All-American and a member of the
1984 U.S. Olympic Team. In 2003, B.J. was named one of
the ACC’s top 50 athletes in conference history.
