COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Tom Glavine went to the Commissioner to ask what Major League Baseball could do to raise awareness of Children’s Cancer. Due to his efforts, MLB secured $1,000,000 from Ameriquest Mortgage Company to support charitable causes, including the CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation. Last August, Tom participated in the Commissioner’s Initiative for Kids, honoring children from CureSearch on Children’s Cancer Awareness Day. For the 13th straight year, Tom hosted the Georgia Transplant Foundation’s Annual Spring Training which assists families of those undergoing or awaiting a transplant. He donated $5,000 to create a Mets Scholarship Fund for Tuesday’s Children, a family services organization that offers an 18-year commitment to children who lost a parent on September 11. He serves as honorary chairman of the Georgia Council on Child Abuse. He also volunteers his time as a member of the National Sports Committee of the Leukemia Society of America. In 2004, Tom received the Joan Payson Award for humanitarian Service from the New York BBWAA and the Good Guy Award from the New Jersey Sports Writers.


BASEBALL CAREER:
Tom Glavine is a 2-time Cy Young Award winner. He was named the 1995 World Series MVP. Tom is a 9-time National League All-Star. He was selected the National League Pitcher of the Year twice. In addition, he has four Silver Slugger Awards. Tom ranks eighth on the all-time list of wins by a lefthander.
The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver.
Proceeds from the event benefit Denver Kids, Inc., a preventative counseling
and mentoring program for at-risk students in Denver Public Schools.
