Prior
to the 2002 season, C.C. Sabathia participated in the
Tribe’s Winter Press Caravan. During his first two
seasons with Cleveland, he has been involved in numerous
community endeavors, including OfficeMax Parent-Child
clinics, Larry Doby RBI program, Red Cross Fire Prevention
Week, Cleveland Scholars program, High Achievers and Giant
Eagle week-long baseball camps. He is a regular visitor
to area hospitals as part of the “Tribe Loving Care”
program. For Thanksgiving 2002, C.C. purchased 275 turkeys
for the St. James AME Church and the Greater Cleveland
AIDS Taskforce. Along with the Cav’s Drew Gooden
in 2004, he donated 200 turkey baskets to the Bethany
Baptist Church. Over the life of his current contract,
he will donate $275,000 to the Larry Doby RBI program.
During the 2003 off-season, he participated in the Oakland
Ballet’s rendition of “The Nutcracker.”
In 2003, he organized the Sabathia Baseball Clinic in
his hometown of Vallejo. C.C. annually donates food around
the holidays to the Vallejo Boys & Girls Clubs.
Last
year, C.C. Sabathia had another solid season, his fourth
in the big leagues. He posted 10 or more wins for the
fourth straight season, becoming the first Indian’s
pitcher since Luis Tiant to record double-digit wins in
each of his first four Major League seasons. Notching
his 50th career win last year, he became the youngest
pitcher to reach this plateau since Atlanta’s Steve
Avery. He was named to the American League All-Star team
in 2003 and 2004.
