COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Throughout May, Roy and other Blue Jays visited numerous schools in the Toronto area to support the Student Rally program to encourage kids to stay in school. In June, wife Brandy and son Braden accompanied Roy to visit over 200 children from the Toronto Community Housing Association who were invited to a sneak preview of Spiderman 2. He has established two programs to give back to the Toronto community and keep with the Jays Care Foundation’s goal of helping children. “Doc’s Box for Kids” is a program that benefits the Hospital for Sick Children. Roy and his wife Brandy host a group of kids six times a year. Roy created “Doc’s Strikeout Challenge” to encourage fans to pledge money for every strikeout he pitches throughout the season. Roy personally contributed $100,000 to Jays Care to assist in several programs, including Field of Dreams and the Rookie League, both of which promote the game of baseball to those who might not have the resources necessary to participate.

BASEBALL CAREER:
In 2003, Roy Halladay established himself as one of the premier pitchers in Major League Baseball. He won the AL Cy Young Award and set a Blue Jays record with 22 wins. He recorded 204 strikeouts, third best in the AL. He has won 41 games in the past two seasons, more than any other ML pitcher. He is a 2-time AL All-Star. His 2004 season was plaqued with injuries. He was the Blue Jays Opening Day pitcher, but finished the season with an 8-8 record.
The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver.
Proceeds from the event benefit Denver Kids, Inc., a preventative counseling
and mentoring program for at-risk students in Denver Public Schools.
