Throughout
May, Roy and other Blue Jays visited numerous schools
in the Toronto area to support the Student Rally program
to encourage kids to stay in school. In June, wife Brandy
and son Braden accompanied Roy to visit over 200 children
from the Toronto Community Housing Association who were
invited to a sneak preview of Spiderman 2. He has established
two programs to give back to the Toronto community and
keep with the Jays Care Foundation’s goal of helping
children. “Doc’s Box for Kids” is a
program that benefits the Hospital for Sick Children.
Roy and his wife Brandy host a group of kids six times
a year. Roy created “Doc’s Strikeout Challenge”
to encourage fans to pledge money for every strikeout
he pitches throughout the season. Roy personally contributed
$100,000 to Jays Care to assist in several programs, including
Field of Dreams and the Rookie League, both of which promote
the game of baseball to those who might not have the resources
necessary to participate.
In
2003, Roy Halladay established himself as one of the premier
pitchers in Major League Baseball. He won the AL Cy Young
Award and set a Blue Jays record with 22 wins. He recorded
204 strikeouts, third best in the AL. He has won 41 games
in the past two seasons, more than any other ML pitcher.
He is a 2-time AL All-Star. His 2004 season was plaqued
with injuries. He was the Blue Jays Opening Day pitcher,
but finished the season with an 8-8 record.
