COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Last year, Eric Chavez and his wife Alex donated $40,000 to the Young Life Organization. Young Life is a Christian Kids Camp. Eric and Alex helped send more than 100 children from urban communities in the Bay Area to Woodleaf, Young Life’s camp in Northern California. Eric bought 1,000 tickets for the game on September 11, 2004 and donated them to members of the Oakland police and fire departments and their families. During batting practice before the game, Eric held an exclusive autograph session with other A’s players on the field for the kids of these officers. Eric and Alex attended the Monte Carlo Classic which raised funds for Special Olympics of Northern California. In addition, Eric has participated in many A’s community and special events throughout the 2004 season, including A’s Community Fund Golf Classic, Mug Root Beer Float Day and A’s FanFest. In 2000, he participated in the Holiday Fest for needy families and the SAFER program.


BASEBALL CAREER:
In 2004, Eric Chavez won his fourth consecutive American League Gold Glove award at third base, making him only the fifth third baseman in AL history to win four or more Gold Gloves. Despite limited playing time due to injury, he led the league with a career-high 95 walks. In high school, he was a two-time All-American selection, hitting .537 his junior year and .458 his senior season.
The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver.
Proceeds from the event benefit Denver Kids, Inc., a preventative counseling
and mentoring program for at-risk students in Denver Public Schools.
