Mike Mussina knows the value of a good education. He graduated with a degree in economics from Stanford in only three and one half years (a five-year program). He formed the Mike Mussina Foundation to annually elect and send 12 kids to college. Selection is based entirely on academics. He is a firm believer that pursuit of higher education is a top priority. For local little league teams in Montoursville, Baltimore and New York, Mike provides baseball equipment. He purchases Yankees tickets for local youth charity organizations. Since his nickname is “Moose,” his guests are seated in the “Mooseketeer” section. In 2003, he was the spokesperson for the Orioles/Baltimore Sun Summer Reading program. He also supported the Baltimore County “Reading Makes Cents” program. In 1998, he produced a PSA for Junior Achievement. Since 1997, he has worked with the College Bound Foundation and the Lycoming County, PA chapter of the American Red Cross. Mike returned the past four off-seasons to participate in the annual Orioles FanFest.

By the end of the 2003 season, Mike Mussina had achieved a most impressive pitching record: second most victories of any pitcher since 1994 (163), fourth most strikeouts since 1999 (973), fifth most wins among active pitchers (199) and sixth highest winning percentage among active pitchers (.644). In the 2003 season, he went 17-8 in 31 starts. Mike ranked third in the AL with 8.2 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched. He was an AL All-Star in 1993 and 1999.
