Charles
Johnson has the heart of a giant. He and his wife Ronda
are extremely generous to the communities in which they
live. They are the hosts of “CJ’s Catches,”
a 12-game sponsorship for less fortunate kids throughout
Denver. They provide all the funds for t-shirts, food
vouchers and tickets to each Saturday home game for the
kids. Charles meets with each group before the game to
give a motivational talk and sign autographs. He will
donate $100 for each base-stealer he throws out as part
of his “Thou Shalt Not Steal” program. He
is strong supporter of the Janita McGriff Foundation,
founded in the memory of his 29 year old cousin who lost
her life to breast cancer. The Foundation purchases school
supplies for needy children, as well as assists families
in need as they deal with cancer. During Christmas 2001,
he presented toys to kids at the African-American Council
of Christian Clergy’s “Dreams Come True”
toy distribution. Charles also taught kids the fundamentals
of baseball at the Liberty City Optimist Club’s
Baseball Celebration.
Charles
Johnson was the starting catcher for the United States
Olympic Team in Barcelona, Spain in 1992. He also started
for the United States National Team at the 1991 Pan American
Games in Havana, Cuba. In 1988, he was a member of the
gold-medal winning USA Junior National Team. For the Rockies,
he is the only catcher to hit a grand slam home run. Charles
is a four-time Gold Glove winner. He was selected for
the 1997 and 2001 NL All-Star teams.
