Todd
Zeile and his wife, the former Julianne McNamara (the
1984 gold medal winning Olympic gymnast), discovered five
years ago that their daughter Hannah suffered from Juvenile
Diabetes. Since that time, the Zeile’s have been
focused on lending their names, support and money to finding
a cure. On
April 26, 2003, while the team was enjoying an off-day
in California, Todd held the first annual Todd Zeile Bowling
Tournament in Hollywood. Calling on his friends, such
celebrities as Pete Sampras, Wayne Gretzky, Mike Piazza,
Al Leiter, Tom Glavine, Heather Locklear, Kenny G, Scott
Hamilton, Bruce Jenner, Robin Ventura and Shawn Green
attended. The event generated more than $200,000 for the
Childhood Diabetes Center in Los Angeles. Todd hosted
a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Day at Shea Stadium
in July this year. In 2001, he was the spokesman for the
New York City Public Library Summer Reading program. He
encouraged more than 65,000 kids to read books over the
summer. Todd purchases tickets for his “Zeile Zone”
to allow underprivileged kids to watch the Mets. Since
September 11, Todd has visited numerous firehouses in
New York to boost the spirits and morale of the city’s
heroes.
A
veteran of 16 Major League seasons, 11 different teams
and more than 2,000 games, Todd Zeile is the only player
in Major League history to hit a home run for 11 different
squads. He has made four trips to post-season play. On
the day Todd was born, September 9, 1965, Sandy Koufax
pitched a perfect game.
