John
McDonald consistently demonstrates his commitment to the
Northeast Ohio community by participating in many of the
Cleveland Indians outreach efforts. He played as a celebrity
golfer in the annual charity golf classic last season
which raised $50,000. John has a soft spot in his heart
for kids and it shows in his willingness to visit sick
children at Rainbow Children’s Hospital and Ronald
McDonald House. He raises their spirits and encourages
a speedy and healthy recovery, giving each child Indians
memorabilia. An enthusiastic supporter of the Cleveland
Indians’ Annual Press Tour, he travels to 17 cities
in one week. “Johnny Mac,” as the fans call
him, was the highlight for many as he helped excite Tribe
fans. This Father’s Day was a memorable experience
for 200 lucky people, thanks to John. Beyond giving them
free tickets to the game, through his “Mac &
Me” program, they got to meet and greet John, enjoy
a complimentary lunch at the ballpark, observe batting
practice and receive a
t-shirt. In 2003, John received the Al Lerner Award from
the Cleveland Sports Commission for his extensive service
to the Cleveland community.
A
spring training knee injury marred John McDonald’s
entire 2003 season, forcing him onto the disabled list
on two separate occasions and ended his season in August.
Although plagued with knee and back problems, he
appeared in 37 games at second base, 27 at shortstop and
23 at third. He underwent successful knee surgery on September
5 in Vail, Colorado. John is now back at full strength
for the 2004 season.
