COMMUNITY SERVICE:
In his hometown of Atlanta, Marquis Grissom sponsors 12 youth baseball teams, including providing transportation. He helps fund Study Hall, a home school that provides food and shelter for kids without parents. In 2001 alone, he visited more than 60 schools, delivering messages of hope. Each year, Marquis hosts a golf tournament to support homeless kids at Boys and Girls Clubs. He participated in the 10th annual “Until There’s a Cure Day,” an HIV/AIDS awareness program. He also lent his support to the Giants Wives Cookbook, which benefits the Giants’ Community Fund. While in Milwaukee, he was honored with the 1999 Michael Harrison Award for community service. In the July 31, 2000 issue of The Sporting News, Marquis was recognized as one of the “99 Good Guys in Pro Sports” for his community service activities. Devoted to his family, Marquis has bought each of his siblings a house. He has 14 brothers and sisters.

BASEBALL CAREER:
Marquis Grissom is a 15-year veteran in the Major Leagues. He is a 2-time All-Star and 4-time Gold Glove winner. He owns a .274 lifetime batting average with 2,117 hits in 2,015 games played. He is one of just six players in Major League history to record 2,000 career hits, 200 home runs and 400 stolen bases. One of the game’s great base runners, he ranks sixth among active players in steals. In 2003, Marquis won the Willie Mac Award as the most inspirational player on the club, voted by his teammates.
The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver.
Proceeds from the event benefit Denver Kids, Inc., a preventative counseling
and mentoring program for at-risk students in Denver Public Schools.
