Shortly
after joining the Diamondbacks for the 1999 season, Randy
Johnson made a personal commitment to aggressively support
the needs of Arizona’s homeless population and to
participate in fund raising efforts and public awareness
of Cystic Fibrosis. He has committed $100 for each strikeout
during the past two seasons to homeless programs through
Diamondback Charities. Since 2000, his “Striking
Homelessness” program has contributed more than
$250,000 to help Arizona’s homeless. He reviews
each grant application the organization receives, chooses
the programs for his investments and personally delivers
the checks. For the fifth consecutive year, Randy gives
a brand new pair of Nike shoes to every child attending
the Diamondbacks Holiday Angel Party. Nearly 2,000 kids
have received new shoes from Randy. His commitment to
Cystic Fibrosis began with a golf tournament he co-hosted
in Seattle. He has brought the tournament to Phoenix with
him, not just lending his name, but adding hands-on involvement
in staging the event.
On
May 18, 2004, Randy Johnson pitched the 17th perfect game
in Major League history against the Atlanta Braves in
a 2-0 victory. At 40, he became the oldest player to pitch
a perfect game. He was named the co-MVP of the 2001 World
Series. In 2000, he was the inaugural winner of the Warren
Spahn Award. He has won the Cy Young Award once in the
AL (1995) and four consecutive years in the NL (1999-2002).
He is a 9-time All-Star, five for the AL.
