For
the 2004 season, Kerry Wood initiated “Woody’s
Weekend Warriors,” a charity ticket program. He
will host 1,200 kids from a number of Chicagoland non-profit
organizations at Wrigley Field. Each guest receives a
t-shirt, autographed photo and lunch. Kerry’s wife
Sarah visits the groups during the games. Also in 2004,
Kerry is participating in the LifeSource Blood Drive to
encourage Chicagoans to donate blood during the month
of July. He has taped a PSA and appears in print ads to
bring awareness to the community. For the past four years,
he has sponsored an “RBI Team” (Reviving Baseball
in the Inner Cities) in Chicago. Kerry has met with a
number of terminally and critically ill children who have
asked to meet him through the Make-A-Wish and Starlight
Children’s Foundations. He is the spokesperson for
the Anti-Cruelty Society’s Dog Fighting Initiative,
a program to combat dog fighting in Chicago. Also receiving
his assistance is the Mayor’s Fitness Council in
conjunction with the Chicago Parks District. Kerry is
an active participant in a number of special events sponsored
by Cubs Care, the charitable arm of the Chicago Cubs.
During
his four-year Major League career, Kerry Wood has held
batters to a .211 average, allowing 525 hits in 691 innings,
while striking out 799 batters. In 2003, he was the Cub’s
opening day starter and a member of the NL All-Star team.
In 1998, Kerry was named the Jackie Robinson NL Rookie
of the Year.
