Each
time John Smoltz successfully closes out a game, he donates
$500 to “Atlanta’s Table,” the perishable
food rescue project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
He created the “Close Out Hunger” program
to fight hunger and poverty in North Georgia. Over the
past two seasons, he has contributed $50,000 ($500 per
save/100 saves) to the program. Twice during the season,
he hosts a canned food drive at Turner Field, which has
generated more than $40,000 for the Food Bank. In May,
he hosted his 12th annual John Smoltz Celebrity Pro-Am
Golf Tournament. Proceeds benefit Children’s Healthcare
of Atlanta. The 2003 event raised $185,000. John is a
founder and board member of Kings Ridge Christian School.
He was instrumental in raising $4,000,000 for the school’s
inception. The John Smoltz Baseball Camp celebrates its
11th year of operation in June 2004. More than 250 youngsters
attend each year. With the Braves organization, John participates
in numerous programs, including Reach Out Be Our Guest,
AFLAC party, DARE photo shoot, Camp Sunshine, Jerseys
Off Their Backs, Christmas in July and Weekend of Caring.
John won the Atlanta Braves Chairman’s Award in
2003 for exceptional community service.
John
Smoltz’s 45 saves in 2003 ranked second in the Majors.
He reached 100 career saves in the fewest number of relief
appearances in history. He has six NL All-Star team selections.
John was chosen by his peers as the Major League Baseball
Players Association Marvin Miller Man of the Year in 2002
and 2003.
