Roy
Halladay has established two programs to give back to
the Toronto community and keep with the Jays Care Foundation’s
goal of helping children. “Doc’s Box for Kids”
is a program that benefits the Hospital for Sick Children.
Roy and his wife Brandy host a group of kids six times
a year. The kids and their families meet Roy and watch
the game from a private Skybox. Each child receives a
t-shirt and some great memories. Roy created “Doc’s
Strikeout Challenge” to encourage fans to pledge
money for every strikeout he pitches throughout the season.
Fans can make a one-time donation to Jays Care, or attach
a dollar amount for each strikeout. Roy personally contributed
$100,000 to Jays Care to assist in several programs, including
Field of Dreams and the Rookie League, both of which promote
the game of baseball to those who might not have the resources
necessary to participate. He also plays in the annual
Jays Care Golf Tournament. During the Blue Jays annual
“Meet the Jays” luncheon, Roy visits with
kids and adults with disabilities.
In
2003, Roy Halladay established himself as one of the premier
pitchers in Major League Baseball. He won the AL Cy Young
Award and set a Blue Jays record with 22 wins. He recorded
204 strikeouts, third best in the AL. He has won 41 games
in the past two seasons, more than any other ML pitcher.
He is a 2-time AL All-Star. In high school, Roy was an
All-State selection for three years and State MVP two
years. He was also second team All-State in basketball.
